I’ve been thinking this would happen – well, really I thought it would be USB flash drives, but close enough. Music will soon have a new format for people to (not) buy – “slotMusic” mini flash memory cards will soon come loaded w/ music. 4 major labels are trying it out to see if folks really are going to opt for a lil card rather than their digi-download. Universal is planning on releasing Akon’s next album on slotMusic in addition to the formats already in use.
Last time I was around a PC – moments few and far between – I noticed that they had a card reader installed so I wonder if Mac will incorporate this feature in coming models. Without a pre-installed reader, you just need a USB card reader to load the files like any other removable data source. The article in the Times said that in addition to your computer, the cards will be readable by “some mobile phones, digital music players and car stereos.”
Made by SanDisk Corp., the slotMusic cards are expected to go on sale before the holiday season at Best Buy Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. We’re still awaiting details on prices and re-usability. It will be cool that the artists can include music, photos, video- really whatever (the label will pay for) they want.
From the tangible album artwork point of view, this REALLY sucks! The first blow to the art was when we went from a nice big 12″ square down to the lil 4.75″ CD square and now it’ll be great fun to have to fit a cover image and text on that 1″ (some are even smaller!) tiny box which will basically be a ‘thumbnail’ like on iTunes. Oh wells. I say ‘Bring back the vinyl!!’
