17 years later: How are we getting along?

Rodney King
(George Holliday / Courtesy of KTLA)

This week marks 17 years since the LA riots sprung by the historic Rodney King verdict. We all remember his plea “Can’t we all just get along?” -

So, how do you think we’re doing?

We may have a black president but do you think racial tensions have eased or heightened? Its deeper than the Korean/Black conflict that erupted during these particular riots – now we are such a blended nation and certain people are doing all they can to resist and remain divided in a land where we supposedly are ‘indivisible with liberty and justice for all.’ Still when I watch the news or read major city news sites, I wonder if its just what you choose to pay attention to that makes you feel like we’re doing better because all over there are still REALLY messed up things going on. Race, gender, sexual orientation. Take Oakland – cops killing kids on the BART. unnoticed. Take New York – still cases of the NYPD force killing men for no reason. Really, what’s different is that we haven’t seen any riots – we’ve become a more obedient nation but some of what used to be SO enraging is just a little less jarring, so does that make it better?

Sojourner Truth bust unveiled in Emancipation Hall

Posted on April 30th, 2009 by missfrolab.
Categories: Art, DC, History, LA.

History was made this week when First lady Michelle Obama, second left, joins House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, left, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, second right, and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, right, to unveil the bronze bust of Sojourner Truth in Emancipation Hall of the US Capitol, on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in Washington. Obama said she hopes Truth, the first black woman to be honored with a bust at the Capitol, would be proud to see a descendant of slaves as America’s first black first lady. Pelosi announced that Truth wouldn’t remain the only black woman honored with a statue in the Capitol for long because a statue of civil rights icon Rosa Parks will soon also be placed there. The bust was done by famous LA sculptor and painter Artis Lane.

Frolab Exclusive: Mos Def’s “The Ecstatic” is offically mastered

Posted on April 24th, 2009 by visionist.
Categories: Frolaborators, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Mos Def, Music.

The anticipation for this album is immense! We’ve been lucky enough to catch up with Mos Def through many stages of recording this album over the last year & a half and last night got the final listen at mastering. WOW. Its hard to describe how good this album sounds!! My first comparison was to the first time I listened to “The Score” – singing you hadn’t heard before, music samples used in ways you hadn’t heard before, rhyme patterns you hadn’t heard before – Dante is delivering what you’ve been waiting for with this one! The tracks you’ve heard already “Quiet Dog”, “Live in Marvelous Times” and “Casa Bey” are standouts but my personal favorites are “Twilight”, “History” feat. Talib Kweli, & wait til you hear the beautiful frolaboration on Georgia Anne Muldrow’s “Roses.” Then there’s one with Slick Rick & one where he does the entire song in Spanish and I don’t know what he says but its amazing. Shouts out to Preservation, Dilla, Oh No & Madlib on the beats, and to Jan Fairchild on the boards and to Bernie Grundman – the master of all mastering.

Overall review: incredible.

Mos Def - The Ecstatic

June 9th folks. And even if it leaks ahead of time, which in these days and times unfortunately you know it will, still buy this for your collection. Its most definitely been worth the wait.

May will be the official “Month of Mos” on Frolab.com so starting next week we’ll have exclusive previews of new songs and video clips from studio sessions, our recent journey to South Africa, &  from the recent Yoshi’s performances in San Francisco.

in the meantime…

Check this live audio clip of Mos performing his version of Kanye’s “Say You Will” at the Blue Note with Robert Glasper’s band “RCDC Experiment” back in January.

we frolaborate.
