Listen to Georgia Anne Muldrow enough and you may “hear the flowers” too. ![]()
(-”Uhuru’s Flight.” that’s another post!)
Technically its no longer the Mos Month of May, but we’re gonna let him have the next week of June, all the way til album drops! More exclusive footage and info coming this week… starting with the “Roses” frolaboration story after the jump…
It went a lil something like this: First, let me say that we’ve got the best iPod playlist of unreleased goodies right now. So, WFRO (aka our ipod radio station!) is steady in effect in the car. Featured artist: Georgia Anne Muldrow. We’ve been listening to her music nonstop, released and unreleased, for the past few years and on some songs, from time to time we think of certain other musicians that would work really well as guest features. So, “Roses”, which had been on Georgia’s myspace last year and is coming out on her upcoming album, just feels so good we imagined Mos Def loving it. Then another unreleased track “Uhuru’s Flight,” has a bit more ‘edge’ so maybe he would like that too. So, note to self, play those for him and just see. Well, then Mos Def comes to LA to do the Bill Maher show and hangs with us (Cognito + me, collectively referred to as “Frolab”). In the car, what are we listening to? What else but Georgia Anne Muldrow exclusive unreleased songs and beats direct from the G’s mothership, well, via the gatekeeper aka Dudley Perkins! So, we’re driving here and there, listening to Georgia. After the show we really try to link up with G, but it was late so instead, we hit Swingers for some grub and call it a night.
Next day, we link up with Mos again and make some stops (Union of course). We go by Fatburger, stop by the crib to eat (crazy: Mos at the crib, we’re petsitting our lawyers lil Yorkie and he steps in the pooch’s poop w/ his Visvim’s while checking out our screenprints of DOOM that were in the back room – oops/yuck/sorry! LOL) , we listen to more Georgia. Mos is captivated to say the least. He’s listening, attempting to check emails, and then we’re like “you wanna go meet her?” – So, we link w/ Dudley and we ride up to G&D’s studio and vibe with our Frokins fam. Listen to fresh out the oven snippets of Georgia’s upcoming jazz project “Jyoti” – Turiya’s Smile (which is AMAZING), we listen to songs from the upcoming release UMSINDO (also amazing) and really just vibe. The decision to work together is made and we part ways, figuring when the time is right, they’ll hook up for some music making magic.
Mos heads back to NY bc he has a XXL interview to go to before he leaves for South Africa and the flight’s shorter from there so he’ll have to get up with G later. Fastforward to the next night, after emailing him those 2 songs earlier in the day, Mos calls Cognito at like 3am (I knew it was coming), “I gotta have Roses on my record. I wrote the verse and everything. She don’t even have to change nothing – the space is there.” Mos proceeds to do the verse over the phone and it’s perfect. Relevant. Meaningful and right in the pocket. Uh, ok. Lets call Georgia and see what she thinks. Dudley? Moms? What ya’ll think? Everyone gives it the go, and whalah. Its done.
A major frolaboration for the recordbooks. This was the first one, but please believe once they get time in the studio together, there will be even more ‘bright moments’ to be had. We love the beginnings of this duo’s possibilities.
Georgia’s version of Roses w/o Mos (+ Roses Pt.2) will be on her UMSINDO (KOCH Canada) record, out in July:
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
You will get the version with Mos Def when you buy “The Ecstatic” next Tuesday! June 9th!! (We’ll post it sooner if we get permission!)
- UPDATE: click here to visit the epistrophik peach blog hear the version w/ Mos Def!
