Producers have confirmed a fall opening for “Fela!”, the musical that the New York Times called “A Show That Melts Walls,” at the Eugene O’Neill Theater!
via Variety
The bio-tuner about Afrobeat musician and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti won strong reviews when it played 37 Arts in an extended run last summer, and this spring went on to pick up legit kudos including a Lucille Lortel for musical and an Obie for thesp Sahr Ngaujah, who originated the role of Kuti and returns to play the part on the Main Stem.
Plot follows not only Fela’s musical career — in which he combined jazz, funk and African traditions to become a pioneer in world music — but also his personal life and work as an activist opposing the corrupt military government of post-colonial Nigeria.
Conceived by Bill T. Jones, Jim Lewis and Steve Hendel, show has a book by Lewis and Jones and is choreographed and helmed by Jones, who picked up a 2007 Tony as choreographer of “Spring Awakening.”
Tuner’s score, comprising Kuti tunes, is performed by Brooklyn band Antibalas, led by Aaron Johnson.
Hendel produces with Ruth Hendel (“Mary Stuart,” “33 Variations”) and Roy Gabay (“The Little Dog Laughed”). The pool of investors is reportedly likely to include big-name contempo musicians such as Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Jay Z.
“Fela!” begins previews Oct. 19 ahead of a Nov. 23 opening.

Graffiti artist Banksy has pulled off an audacious stunt amid tight secrecy to stage his biggest ever exhibition.
I love that no one knows who he is, not even the museum curator! The show is up all summer (until August) at Bristol’s museum, and its a FREE exhibition!

The Simple Things is Pharrell’s latest artistic project alongside Takashi Murakami, currently being exhibited at Art Basel Switzerland and explores and illustrates “the metaphor of value.” In this new insightful interview with Ute Thon (Art Magazine), Pharrell explains the concept and irony behind the installation and offers a look into his interest in art and design, the artists and designers he admires, and his own design works. He also makes an interesting distinction between “bling” and what it is that he wears. Apparently you have to be a full-time rapper for it to be considered “bling.” Otherwise, its just nice jewelry. (if u say so).
The highly acclaimed Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin presented the 6-foot Takashi Murakami sculpture, made in collaboration with the U.S. record producer and designer, featuring a glass-fiber, steel and acrylic head based on Murakami’s cartoon-inspired signature character Mr. Dob. In its mouth you find objects which are the essentials in Pharrell Williams’ everyday life: A can of Pepsi, a cup cake, a sneaker and bottle of Johnson’s baby lotion (not just any baby lotion, the PINK bottle!). These objects are encrusted with 26,000 diamonds and gems.
The piece sold for $2 million within the first 3o minutes.
