Georgia Anne Muldrow

So today brings about mixed emotions. I’ve seen lots of “Happy Fourth of July” tweets, some just looking for the BBQ, and then the reminders that while this is America’s “birthday” – the date we celebrate is for a country where Africans were still slaves and “liberty and justice” were not for all – in some cases, its still not. We understand that this day isn’t exactly met with applause and fireworks all the way around, but everybody loves fireworks, don’t they?

Continuing on with a special treat from Georgia Anne Muldrow’s forthcoming album “UMSINDO“, this song sounds a little bit different on a day like today. I admit, when I first heard it I was like, “really? wow.” -  but I couldn’t help but LOVE everything about it at the same time. The song itself is straight hip-hop fonk and her lyricism, attitude and delivery is like “word?” – and then once you find yourself singing along your like “wait a minute. but, ok, I see what you’re saying. but are “they” listening?” and it causes you to actually inspect her P.O.V. On the surface it may feel a tad non-patriotic but the point is deeper – she touches on war policy, politics & race. African American’s have such a conflicted ownership of any country. For the most part, we’re not exactly sure WHICH country we came from on the continent of Africa, and on top of that, we get reminded that we sure didn’t come from this country America. (Kinda interesting the album has a Canada release.) So, we’re here now – yes – but do you feel like you’re a PART of it? You may, but I guarantee there is a large part of the community that will thank Georgia Anne Muldrow for putting some of the thoughts that have been a bit tough to key in on, in a song.

Creators, go ahead and take this ya’ll. We make this, I-n-I don’t fake the fonk.” – GAM
