Grammy for an album cover?! Yes please. I’m one of those non-music making graphic designer/art directors that, for years, has realized that my only hope of ever being officially nominated for a Grammy is if I designed an album cover that actually got recognition as one of the years “Best”. SO, naturally, every year I check the list of nominees to see which covers they chose to honor and usually roll my eyes a lil and think of SO many others that I personally gravitate towards more, but not the point. Here are this years packaging and box set nominations – Obviously a jpg image of only the cover is probably not the best representation of the tangible 3-dimensional packaging experience but this is the internet so here u go…
Best Recording Package:
Back From The Dead- Brian Porizek, art director (Spinal Tap)

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today – Stefan Sagmeister, art director (David Byrne & Brian Eno):
Middle Cyclone – Neko Case & Judge, art directors (Neko Case):

Splitting Adam – Jeff Harrison, art director (Splitting Adam):

This one actually has a youtube video to showcase the holographic cover which is pretty cool. Cover budgets = designer bliss!
Tathagata – Szu Wei Cheng & Hui Chen Huang, art directors (Various Artists):

Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package
A Cabinet Of Curiosities
Mathieu Bitton & Scott Webber, art directors (Jane’s Addiction):

The Clifford Ball
Masaki Koike, art director (Phish):

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
Stefan Sagmeister, art director (David Byrne & Brian Eno):
Lost In The Sound Of Separation (Deluxe Edition)
Jordan Butcher, art director (Underoath):

Neil Young Archives Vol. I (1963–1972)
Gary Burden, Jenice Heo & Neil Young, art directors (Neil Young):

So who do you think should win?
& WHY are the Grammy Awards the only show that includes the packaging art as a category? I think at least MTV should add it as a category… I might get too annoyed at the nominees if BET joined in tho. LOL. #my2cents
