I don’t remember hearing his story when it was happening - maybe because we didn’t live in California yet and I missed the 20/20 episode, - but DeWayne McKinney, a man who served 20 years in Orange County prison for a 1980 robbery-murder at a Burger King that he did not commit, who was then released, moved to Hawaii and turned his settlement money into a successful ATM business, died this morning in a scooter accident. What first caught my eye about this story was the accident because Janay, our frolaborator, recenctly returned from Honolulu and had a scary scooter accident but thankfully was ok. But then realizing that ‘you don’t hear about black men turning their lives around like this’ really hit me.
The story of DeWayne McKinney was apparently discussed around Hollywood to turn his journey into a feature film - I wonder where this leaves things. Not for the entertainment value, but for the message of turning ones life around no matter what cards you’ve been dealt. Obviously not everyone wrongfully convicted (especially black men) gets to walk away, let alone with $1 million dollars from the police, BUT he did, and he moved to Hawaii (a man after my own heart!) and kept life happening. I love that message and hope it is a movie one day.
For more on his story, check out these articles by ABC News (20/20).

$700 Billion bailout? $51 Trillion debt? Conspicuous consumption? Unemployment? Self-employment? I don’t know about you but I got money on the brain. Do I have enough? (NO) Will I have enough? What do I need to keep making it for anyway? & why I gotta keep making MORE?! Who made this system and why do I feel like I’m getting the short end of the stick? Where did it start? I don’t really remember the details (if there were any) of that lesson in middle school social studies class - its been a while - so if you’re like me and would like a lil refresher course on this thing we call ‘money’ - watch this animated feature by Paul Grignon that breaks down the history of our monetary system and how it is run today. Its a long video (47 minutes) but you’ll feel smarter. Promise!

From CBC News Canada……
The hope is for Miracle at St. Anna to draw attention to the wartime contributions of minority soldiers, so much of which remains largely unknown to the general public, the director said.
A professor of film for New York University (who provided his cast with an extensive “war room” of movies, literature and research documents as part of their preparation), Lee ran through a host of examples, ranging from the black fighter pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen to the Nisei (second-generation Japanese-American) soldiers who fought on the European front.
Historically, he said, U.S. films depicting the war focus on only one perspective.
“John Wayne is kicking Nazi ass and he’s kicking Japanese ass. If it’s a western, he’s killing the savage Indians … I’m not trying to kill [Wayne's reputation], because it wasn’t his fault, but he was built up to represent America,” Lee said.
“We cannot continue putting out these lies again and again. Young people growing up have no idea that this stuff even happened.”
Next spring, Lee pointed out, George Lucas is set to release a film about the Tuskegee Airmen.
“Hopefully [St. Anna and Lucas's film] will spark the many other stories that have yet to be told about this great war and the so-called great generation.”

There’s an interesting article (with some fly artwork by Philip Burke) in the New Yorker today about the experience of watching your music come out of a laptop. Its crazy bc we’ve been at some events and also get perplexed at how some DJs really look like they could be playing solitaire while their Serato does the tricks. Its convenient and completely in tune with our ‘digital age’ however its sorta boring to watch. Remember being mesmerized by the DJ flippin records, going back and forth between breaks, actually having to turn around to dig in their crates? Times are a’changin. The article talks to Brooklyn band “Battles” and I guess its worth mentioning that 1 of their guitarists, Tyondai Braxton, rocks a fro!!
