Have a fun & safe holiday. But know not everyone was ‘independent’ this day. Fourth of July celebrates July 4, 1776 - if you remember from last month’s post, the last slaves weren’t freed til 89 years later - June 19th, 1865. I really had never given it much thought til now…

June 19th, 1865 marks the day that the last slaves were freed and is referred to as “Juneteenth.” Growing up, my parents were always heading to a Juneteenth celebration in Maryland, Virginia or South Carolina. Now living on the west coast, I haven’t felt that there is the same kind of connection to ‘black history’ as you feel when in the south. And historically, that makes since. It also doesn’t seem like our younger generation spends much time remembering these ’slave’ holidays but I think its worth mentioning, especially if you don’t know anything about it! Take a little time to think about the ‘freedom’ we are now born with and what you’ve been able to do with it and what you’re not doing with it! Freedom ain’t free! Do something with it! We’ve come a long way but there is still much progress to make - we all have a part to play! Just stay wit it. Here’s a link to a Time magazine brief history on the day and google it for more info if you’re interested.

Remember when all you could get on BET on Sundays was Bobby Jones Gospel and some infomercials. How nice of them to “upgrade” their Sunday playlist with of all things, Beef III. And then, a marathon of their latest and greatest in-house production, Hell Date. Sigh. I’m sorta missing the infomercials.

So… posts have been slow but that’s only because we’ve been totally consumed with uploading our photo archives to our new Frolab flickr page. We’ve had a free flickr page for about a year now and upgrading to Pro has totally changed the game! No more restrictions and with the added ease of the photo uploader ever so nicely incorporated into the new browser Flock, sharing the images that have been trapped in our harddrives is easier than ever. Plus, I’ve been hating Safari and Firefox isn’t really that exciting. Any of you with crazy iPhoto libraries due to these huge memory cards that our digital cameras have these days are bound to fall for it the same way we have. You can just drag your photos to the Flock uploader and its done. We look forward to using our flickr page in the future and when you have some time, browse thru our past. And sign up for your own flickr page and show us all the photos you have taken but never get to show anyone!
Happy flock-a-flickring!

It seems to be easier these days to get a gun then it is to get a job, education or even a simple hug and reminder that someone loves you!
This is not the first time Pharoahe has penned such a poignant song for the times.

Our prayers go out to the families of the students who lost their lives on monday and also to each family who looses a loved one as a result of another person’s evil motives daily. Baghdad, Darfur & on and on till the break…………
